Лечение неизлечимого - новое мышление в медицине

How do we switch to integral medicine? It's not so easy as it seems. A mere sum of means and methods- swallowing a pill and an herbals preparation, followed by two or three Herbal teas and self-suggestion- is not enough for good health. This is not what is meant by integral, or system medicine. What is crucial is not subtraction but interaction of all sorts of medicine. Human health depends not only on absence or presence of diseases, but on harmony between the body, spirit and consciousness, absence or presence of finer-than-disease disturbances- hereditary weakness of organs, dysfunction, pre- and post- illness conditions. A combination of fine disturbances undermines the health of man. This is why methods of traditional medicine help to reveal and remove hidden multiple disturbances. Modern medicine practically cannot do that, because its diagnostic arsenal is always directed towards revealing and correcting diseases alone. Thus, traditional and non- traditional medicines look at human health from contradicting each other, they organically combine and are integrated from both a diagnostic and treatment standpoint

Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societies

How do differences in receptivity among societies arise? A laundry list of at least 14 explanatory factors has been proposed by historians of technology. One is long life expectancy, which in principle should give prospective inventors the years necessary to accumulate technical knowledge, as well as the patience and security to embark on long development programs yielding delayed rewards. Hence the greatly increased life expectancy brought by modern medicine may have contributed to the recently accelerating pace of invention. The next five factors involve economics or the organization of society: (1) The availability of cheap slave labor in classical times supposedly dis- 15o ' GUNS, GERMS, AND STEEL couraged innovation then, whereas high wages or labor scarcity now stimulate the search for technological solutions. For example, the prospect of changed immigration policies that would cut off the supply of cheap Mexican seasonal labor to Californian farms was the immediate incentive for

The Rise and Fall of the Third Chimpanzee. Evolution and Human Life

In the critiques that some biologists have directed at sociobiology, two fears recur: that a demonstrated evolutionary basis for a barbaric behaviour would seem to justify it; and that a demonstrated genetic basis for the behaviour would imply the futility of attempts at change. In my view, neither fear is warranted. As for the first, one can seek to understand how something arose, regardless of whether one considers that something admirable or abominable. Most books analysing the motives of murderers are not written in an effort to justify murder, but instead to understand its causes as a way of preventing it. As for the second fear, we are not mere slaves to our evolved characteristics, not even to our genetically acquired ones. Modern civilization is fairly successful at thwarting ancient behaviours like infanticide, and one of the main objectives of modern medicine is to thwart the effects of our harmful genes and microbes, despite our having come to understand why it is natural for those genes and microbes to tend to kill us
